The campus of Radford University in southwestern Virginia, was put on lockdown tonight after a man was fatally shot outside the school and the suspects fled the campus, the university said.

Some details about the shooting were released late tonight. Police were called just after 9 pm in response to the shooting, which occurred a few blocks from the school, said Michael Hemphill, a spokesman for the university. The victim was not immediately identified, was taken to Medical Center New River Valley.

Students were told to hold within the police searched the suspect, who remained at large.
