Top Boxing News: Amir Khans training style from Virgil Hunter
Virgil Hunter talks about Amir Khan’s training. Virgil Hunter was recently appointed by Briton fighter Amir Khan to train him to success. Khan, following his loss to American unbeaten fighter Danny Garcia, fired Hall of Famer coach Freddie Roach and joined hands with Hunter, believing that the latter can teach him better boxing.
Hunter was asked about the major changes he is trying to bring in Khan. The American trainer replied, “Well, I felt that he needed an understanding of boxing. He needed more mental training instead of physical, and that that was going help him.”
Even Khan has asserted in his recent interviews that Hunter is trying to make him a smart boxer instead of working on his physical attributes.
For now, Khan stands as a fighter who is on a major decline in his career. He is going through a rough patch following his two consecutive losses. He lost his unified titles to American fighter Lamont Peterson in December last year. This year, he went head to head against Danny Garcia only to lose his WBA title.
Many critics have called Khan a write-off but the Briton has refused to step down and wants to give boxing priority over other things. According to Khan, it is a rough patch but he is not over yet.
Following his loss to Garcia, Khan asserted that he needs to focus more on his training and less on travelling, something that was mandatory while working with Roach. Therefore, Khan switched his trainer hoping for a better outcome.
