Former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani sharply criticized the Obama administration on Sunday for reading suspected terrorist Faisal Shahzad his Miranda rights, saying that the suspect should have been declared an “enemy combatant.”
The one-time presidential candidate also took on the White House for pursuing what he called a “policy of political correctness.”
“I would not have given him Miranda warnings after a couple of hours of questioning,” Giuliani said on ABC’s “This Week.” “I would have declared him an enemy combatant. ..read more

WASHINGTON — The public is getting its clearest look at the government missteps that allowed a suspected terrorist to slip through post-Sept. 11 security and threaten lives on American soil.
The White House on Thursday planned to make public a declassified account of the near-catastrophe on a Detroit-bound flight on Christmas Day, and President Barack Obama was to address the nation about its findings and recommendations. Grim Obama says terror attack ‘dots’ not connected
WASHINGTON (AP) – A grim-faced President Barack Obama declared Tuesday there was a deep failure of national intelligence in the botched Christmas Day airliner terror attack over Detroit, telling the nation the government had enough information to thwart potential disaster but could not “connect those dots.” Speaking after a blunt meeting with his security team, Obama said there had been even more “red flags” than had already been acknowledged: that an al-Qaida affiliate ..read more

One of the Capitol Hill newspapers estimated that I’ve taken more than 7,000 round trips on Amtrak over the course of my career. But the one I made on Jan. 17, 2009 was a bit different. When I got there, there were 8,000 people standing in the freezing cold. And I wasn’t racing to reach the 7:46 a.m. Metroliner (later, the Acela) that I had taken thousands of times before.
I was meeting up with the train ..read more

Remember when Republicans portrayed themselves as tough guys? The party of John Wayne? Hard to picture now, right? Ever since an Islamic fundamentalist tried to blow up a flight from Amsterdam to Detroit, Republicans have, as Steve Benen eloquently put it, engaged in a “collective display of pants-wetting.”
The naked politicization of the attempted attack has been both shameful and hypocritical. (Can you imagine what these same Republicans, from Dick Cheney to members of Congress, would have done if Democrats criticized ..read more

Talk of air strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities is rife. Washington atmospherics suggest that the dogs of war soon will be unleashed. So, too, does the ominous background music. A series of reports speak darkly of this weapons program or that; the tentative agreement on the disposition of low enriched uranium has crumbled; the Israelis bluster; the airways and op ed pages brim with Cassandra warnings that the only answer to the intolerable prospect of a nuclear ..read more

WASHINGTON (AFP) –
The United States has overhauled its terror watchlists after the attempted Christmas Day bombing of an airliner which has led President Barack Obama to order a widespread review of security measures.
Obama, who has denounced “systemic” intelligence failures in the bombing attempt, was scheduled to meet on Tuesday with US intelligence chiefs to discuss the attempt by a Nigerian man to bring down the US-bound jet.
An administration official told AFP the president would unveil an “initial series of reforms” ..read more
